I am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.My father lost many family members to German Nazis simply for being Jewish.Dad had the strength to carry on, emigrate to the United States, marry my mother, father five children.I dedicate my small, simple Judaica art site to my father's family, some of whom I never knew, to my mother and her family, and my brothers, sister; my great husband, two lovely daughters, a son-in-law and, my beautiful granddaughter. Shalom aleichem. But also: Never Again!

This is the mountain of peace, "Har Shalom". The sunsets in Colorado are just amazing, I never tire of them. The idea of peace, be it in nature or the world, is alluring. Put the two together -- here is my interpretation.

Ah, by the sea! By the sea, by the marvelous sea! Such a soothing spot to be. We're back from a trip to the southeastern part of the United States, Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, to be exact. Talk about hot and humid -- these places are very much that! I'm not sure why we chose to travel in the heat of the summer but am certainly glad that we did. The scenery was exquisite -- Savannah with the Spanish moss hanging from the trees, particularly the crepe myrtles, which were in bloom, the luscious squares that Oglethorpe planned. Charleston has its own charm, a revitalized city with the old buildings recaptured with colonial elegance. So...I have another story to tell about Savannah, but will wait on that for an upcoming blog. I want to make sure I have my details correct -- it's about the Jews who reached the city....
This painting is something of a "marbelized" shalom -- the paints sometimes call the shots, not me. It's rich in its red hues and was an interesting production.

The reason I named this particular painting on glass "Sea Waves Shalom" is when you see a close up view of it, it truly is reminiscent of the waves in the ocean. Ah, if we only lived near an ocean. I would love it. There is nothing quite as peaceful and calming to me as lying in the sun in the sand on the beach, listening to the pounding surf. This will have to suffice as a replacement for now. Shalom!
Oooh, this is the sweet time of day for me. I love a good dusk, sunset, whatever! And I enjoy working in soft pastels -- they are so dreamy and buttery. This particular small painting is framed in a simple black with gold lip frame and measures 4"x6". And the mountains in the background are our very own Rocky Mountains here in Colorado.
HAPPY TO SAY THAT THIS PAINTING HAS SOLD. Many years ago, I'm dating myself here, I saw the original "Fiddler on the Roof" on Broadway in New York City. I loved it. It was my 21st birthday gift from my mother and father and one of my favorite scenes and tunes was "To Life, To Life, L'Chaim"! Full of energy and vibrancy, a joy to hear and behold.
I've lost family and friends, many of them, over the years and this has taught me in a very big way to cherish life, every day, no matter how tough the days are. This is "chai", "life". My painting, ironically, reminds me of Marc Chagall, although unintentional -- I realized that he was chock full of life in his art work, full of gold, and swirls, and life. I would never be so pretentious to think I was really anything like Chagall artistically, honestly -- it just happened that way! Sometimes glass paints take on a life of their own!

Living along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, we are lucky enough to see some very lovely sunsets. This is one of them. It is reminiscent of stained glass and hard to capture in a photograph, but very lovely in person!
Although I have never been to Barcelona, Spain, I have been to Ravenna, Italy, and have fallen in love with mosaic tiles. They are so lovely. So this is my version of mosaics, painted onto glass, surrounding my Chai. The glass surface is smooth, I need to paint backwards, and cannot see the end result until the next day! This is because it takes quite a while for these specially formulated glass paints to dry -- and I've learned the hard way not to rush the process, unfortunately. The painting itself measures 5"x7" and comes in a woodgrained frame. What is the reason for selling it framed? To protect the glass, which is fragile until it is in a frame.

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.
